Dr. Justin Jelen grew up outside of Chicago, Illinois before relocating to New Orleans, Louisiana to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Science from Tulane University. He then moved to Portland where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology and Doctorate of Chiropractic degree from the University of Western States in 2011. Dr. Jelen stresses the crucial nature of properly functioning musculoskeletal, immune, and nervous systems to achieve optimal patient health. He is an adamant believer in the importance of a natural, holistic approach to patient care. Dr. Jelen ardently emphasizes patient education and ultimately giving his patients the knowledge, confidence, and tools necessary to take an active role in their recovery to optimum health and future injury prevention.
Dr. Jelen’s integrated approach to treatment includes the co-management of patients’ new and existing conditions with other healthcare professionals—including medical doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists, naturopathic doctors, personal trainers, acupuncturists, and podiatrists. Personally connecting with the patient as a whole person and catering treatment to suit each individual patient are principal aspects of Dr. Jelen’s vision for peak patient health.
Dr. Jelen is a certified provider of Active Release Technique (ART), which is a highly effective, state-of-the-art soft-tissue mobilization technique. He has experience treating athletes of all levels at various sport events throughout the state, such as the Portland Marathon, Pacific Crest Triathlon, Portland Fit Running Group, Nike Special Olympics Med-Fest, and the Columbia Star Ball ballroom dancing.
In 2016, Dr. Jelen became a certified graduate of Whiplash Injury Biomechanics & Traumatology, Modules 1-4, by the Spine Research Institute of San Diego, which is considered the most in-depth course educating healthcare professions on the aftermath of a whiplash injury. During this intensive course, Dr. Jelen became familiar with the epidemiology of whiplash and brain injuries, the mechanical factors of motor vehicle crashes, and the wide range of physical injuries and clinical conditions that can occur. He learned how to conduct comprehensive physical examinations and all about the latest applications of cutting edge imaging technologies such as CT, MRI, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and others.
Personally, Dr. Jelen remains as active as possible, by playing basketball, hiking, olympic lifting, CrossFit training, running, road cycling, and doing yoga. He has years of experience teaching indoor cycling (spinning) classes at local fitness centers and studios, and can occasionally be seen taking a class around the Pearl. He has been an active member of the community, including as a highly-regarded speaker at New Seasons Market Wellness Series, educating individuals and groups on proper nutrition, wellness, and appropriate optimal lifestyle behaviors. You may run into him around town enjoying some of Portland’s many wonderful restaurants and eateries, or at farmers markets collecting local items to be carefully prepared and cooked up while at home.
